Orkut : Voter awareness campaign at Lucknow University

LUCKNOW: Post a scrap on Orkut and invite a friend to vote. Log on to a social networking site and replicate the message across a community. It
is something that even students can do.

The voter awareness campaign that was started at the Lucknow University
(LU) with the aforementioned message, on Thursday, had hordes of students flocking to it to get the details. The girls outnumbered boys proving they are better aware on issues that concern the governance of nation.

The session witnessed students learning a simpler way to get themselves registered as voters. The group had both the first time voters and also those who had used the right to vote earlier.

"Can we cast our vote from Lucknow,'' was a common query of outstation students. And, they were told they can. As a citizen of India and above 18 years of age anyone can cast a vote from anywhere provided he has been living at his current address for at least six months.

Some of the students also wanted to know how can they vote when they do not have a voter ID card. Their doubts were dispelled by volunteers who highlighted that a person who has his name on the electoral rolls can vote. "Voter ID card is simply the proof of identity,'' said Manu Singh, a volunteer.

The volunteers are targeting colleges and universities to reach out to the youth and to exhort them to exercise their right to vote and to bring others to the fold. "Registering for a vote can be as simple as logging on to the campaign website,'' said Singh.

The concept is driven by results of Bihar municipal elections of 2007. At least 50 per cent of candidates who won the elections were less than 30 years of age. It prompted a non-profit organisation to start a nationwide endeavour to dispel the belief that registering oneself to vote is a cumbersome process.

"You can encourage others to register for voting,'' said Manu Singh, a volunteer who interacted with the students. If the person has his name in the electoral votes he can vote. Students wishing to register for voting need not have a address proof document with their name on it. They can use documents with the name of their parents, relatives and friends.

The students can themselves turn a campus crusader by encouraging as many students as possible to get registered for voting. The campaign had recently been conducted in few other colleges also including the new campus of LU.
