Social Networking –A cool tashan for youth !!
By Deepanshu Mohan
The world is a smaller place now, because of all the social network sites, such as Orkut, Big Adda, etc. They have removed the barrier of distance and brought friends together. But these sites also have their demerits. Adnan Patrawala is an example.
SOCIAL NETWORKING sites like Orkut, Hi5, Big Adda and many others have now made networking amongst people much stronger and has removed the barrier of distance completely. It has now become a cool tashan for the youth to be on these sites. If you are not the part of the league then you are not happening. Through these sites people find it quite easy to approach anyone they want to.
Such social networking sites have communities which enable people from different places to come together and know each other better. It’s also quite easy to find an old school or college friend if one knows that he/she is available on any of the sites, like Orkut.
But one can also say that these sites have become more of an addiction than a necessity as many people do prefer coming online and signing up to these sites rather than doing sum other productive work. These sites have an ugly side also. Posting of obscene pictures, sending vulgar messages are some of the negative activities happening on Orkut. Reports also reveal that a girl was duped by a ‘friend’ who lured her with a job and then extracted a huge amount of money from her, all these go against the morals and promote unethical means.
The very infamous kidnapping and murder of Mumbai boy, Adnan Patrawala who was allegedly abducted by his Orkut friends for money is another example. Though Orkut cannot be solely blamed, it has played a significant role in the execution of these crimes. To the contrary these networking sites also have various merits attached to them, there have been cases where people have had matrimonial alliances through these sites, one also gets to know about the person’s habits, preferences, and way of living by reading through their profiles.
Says Prashant, “ I met Archana on Orkut for the first time through a common friend and now we going to get married on the 30th”, in the similar way Arjun, working as an executive in a multi national company says, “ I hardly had time for my friends after I got a job, through Orkut I got in touch with almost all of my friends, even those one’s with whom I lost touch, way back after my school days.”
So in a way all these social networking sites have made the world a smaller place to live in, and one can lucidly say that there is much more to these social Internet networks than just social networking.
